About Preliminary Emotion Experience and Expressive Suppression Scale
The preliminary scale used in the current factor analyses is an unpublished questionnaire developed by author ASC based on 14 of the 20 items on the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson, Clark & Tellegen, 1988). The 14 emotion types were chosen based on face validity and support for coupling from PANAS factor analysis studies.
Item couplets were selected to capture: Fear (Afraid, Scared), Hostility (Angry, Hostile), Guilt (Guilty, Ashamed), Sadness (Sad, Lonely), Joviality (Happy, Excited), Self-assurance (Proud, Confident), and Attentiveness (Alert, Attentive). At Site #1, participants received a separate prompt for each of the 14 emotions and were asked three questions: “In the past year, how often have you felt this way?”, “Generally, how well could someone else tell from your face, body or voice that you are feeling this way?”, “Generally, when you feel this way, do you tend to hide or show the way you feel?”. The response selection for each of these questions was based on 7-point Likert scales.
We refer to these three questions below as “frequency of experience,” “clarity of expression,” and “likelihood of showing expression.” At Site #2, investigators used an abbreviated version of the measure that presented the seven emotion couplets as prompts (e.g., “Fear: Afraid, Scared”), followed by the same three questions and answer choices.
