Background/Description

A social-protective behaviors’ inventory (ISSB) was designed to capture multiple dimensions of social support, with a focus on the material actions of others to support others and emotional relief. The ISSB which is initially used in studies of college students is now widely used among different groups in order to establish the role of social support in mental health and coping. Instead of just examining the perception of support, the ISSB asks about the frequency and nature of supportive actions, thereby becoming a solid tool for evaluatingsupport in personal and community relationships.

The development of the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors (ISSB) is due to Barrera, M., Sandler, I. M. and Ramsay, T. B. which is a measure of the number of social support that a person gets from others. The Inventory of Social Supportive Behaviors (ISSB) is a self-report measure consisting of 40 items, which was intended to measure the frequency of different types of assistance received by individuals in the previous month.

The designing of the inventory incorporated the essence of the social support system which can be physical (like provisions of products) or psychological such as (the listening, understanding, and exertion of esteem) assistance. Subjects on the 5-point Likert scale (1=not at all, 2=once or twice, 3=about once a week, 4=several times a week, and 5=about every day) are requested to evaluate the percentages of each point. A 19-item short-form version of the instrument is also available. The background information of the ISSB includes information on the reliability and factor structure of the ISSB.

Administration, Scoring and Interpretation

  • Explain to participants that this inventory focuses on actual supportive behaviors they may have received, rather than general perceptions.
  • The ISSB is suitable for individual and group settings and can be self-administered or conducted by a researcher.
  • Participants respond to a set of items that describe supportive behaviors, rating how often they have received each type of support.
  • A Likert scale is used, allowing participants to indicate the frequency of these supportive behaviors.

Reliability and Validity

  • Reliability: The ISSB demonstrates good internal consistency across different studies, with reliable results in various demographic groups.
  • Validity: Construct and criterion validity have been established, with the scale showing meaningful correlations with measures of psychological well-being, stress coping, and mental health indicators.
