A person with a narcissistic personality is totally centered on his or her own needs and feelings while ignoring the needs and feelings of others. An example would be an infant or a small child. They see themselves as the center of their world. In their case, this is essential for survival or their basic needs would not get met. Even though children are self-centered, they are not defined as being narcissistic because their behavior is expected for their developmental stage.
If you are in early adulthood (around 18 years old) and are interested in being diagnosed as narcissistic as defined by the DSM IV-TR, you need to be arrogant, exploitative, require excessive admiration, have a sense of entitlement, and believe you are “special” and should only associate with other equally “special” people. In addition, try to step on people and offer insults whenever possible.
