Basal forebrain

The area at the bottom of the forebrain near the hypothalamus which includes the nucleus basalis, diagonal band, medial septum, and substantial innominate, produces acetylcholine and is important in the regulation of sleep and in brain plasticity and memory. Damage to this area often results in memory loss and confabulation in older persons.
