Background/Description
The development and initial validation of a newly created scale to measure the attitude toward the provision of long-term care (ATPLTC Scale) is presented. The ATPLTC is a 26-item self-report scale designed for use without regard for the cause of the LTC need itself. The research is based on a sample of 188 respondents including caregivers to the mentally retarded and elderly, as well as non-caregivers. Using Cronbach’s alpha, the reliability of the scale was found to be .863. Content validity is supported following Nunnally. Initial criterion-related and construct validity is demonstrated statistically through the use of a variety of correlational techniques.
Administration, Scoring and Interpretation
- Staff Training: Invest in education on dementia care, communication skills, and resident-centered approaches. This fosters empathy and improves interactions.
- Supportive Work Environment: Address workload, staffing shortages, and offer competitive compensation to reduce burnout and increase job satisfaction, leading to better resident care.
- Resident-Centered Culture: Empower staff to individualize care plans and prioritize resident dignity and autonomy. This can be achieved through resident and family council involvement.
- Technology Adoption: Implement technology that can streamline administrative tasks and free up staff time for resident interaction.
