About Multidimensional Measure of Empathy
Three subscales of a multidimensional measure of empathy (Davis, 1983) were used to examine perspective-taking (e.g., “I try to look at everybody’s side of a disagreement before I make a decision”; seven items, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient = .83); empathic concern, hereafter referred to as sympathy (e.g., “I am often quite touched by things that I see happen”; seven items, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient = .76); and personal distress (e.g., “In emergency situations, I feel anxious and ill-at-ease”; seven items, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient = .60).
Participants were asked to rate how well each item describes them on a 5-point scale where 1 = does not describe me well and 5 = describes me very well. Several researchers have presented evidence of adequate reliability and validity (e.g., Davis & Franzoi, 1991; Laible, Carlo, & Raffaelli, 2000).
