Three pairs of nuclei at the base of the cerebral cortex including the caudate nuclei, putamen, and globus pallidus with connections to the motor cortex and the brainstem which control voluntary movement and posture.

An area of the forebrain that is important to smooth muscle movement and actions. This area works in conjunction with the midbrain to help us avoid moving in choppy, fragmented ways.
